Nelson Hospital now heated by landfill gas
(23/02/2006) Commercial operation of Energy for Industry's landfill gas project has now commenced.
Landfill gas is now flowing from Energy for Industry's treatment plant at the York Valley landfill, down a 2km pipeline to Nelson Hospital, where it is converted into heat via a new gas boiler recently commissioned at the hospital by Energy for Industry.
The heat generated by the gas meets the majority of the hospital's heating requirements at this time of year, heat that would otherwise be generated from coal.
The project significantly reduces the hospital's use of coal, not only saving it an estimated $48,000 in heating costs per annum, but also contributing to cleaner and healthier air in Nelson and a reduction in CO2 emissions, for which the project was awarded Emission Reduction Units under the Government's Projects to Reduce Emissions programme.
